Bauchi Government secures $18million World Bank intervention fund to tackle unemployment

In Its efforts to tackle unemployment, the Bauchi State Government said it has secured a World Bank intervention programme at the cost of 18m dollars to address the problem of unemployment in the state.

The Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Alhaji Aminu Hammayo disclosed this while briefing journalists on Tuesday on the achievements of the Ministry from 2007 to date at the state secretariat in Bauchi.

The Commissioner who doubles as the commissioner for lands and environment disclosed that the state government had already signed a subsidiary credited agreement along seven other states in the country to introduce a State version of SURE-P programme aimed at creating employment opportunities in all the 322 wards of the 20 local government areas of the state.

He further explained that the purpose of the World Bank intervention programme was to create employment for the youth who are going to be paid on a monthly basis and to strengthen the existing structures on ground in the area of youth empowerment.

Hammayo noted that the poor implementation of budget in the state was as a result of untimely release of Federal allocation into the state account.

FCT Area Councils share N2.2bn revenue, excess crude

Federal Capital Territory Area Councils Joint Account Allocation Committee JAAC has distributed 2.2 billion naira among the six area councils and other stakeholders in the FCT being revenue that accrued for the month of May 2013.

The amount represents an increase of N52 million over the N2,1 billion shared by the six area councils of Abaji, Abuja Municipal, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali for the month of April 2013.

The Chairman of FCT Area Councils JAAC and Honourable Minister of State for FCT, Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide, who confirmed this during the Committee’s meeting in Abuja, said Value Added Tax (VAT) accounted for the bulk of the revenue from the Federation Account.

She gave the breakdown of the allocation as: N1.059 billion from VAT, N821.59 million from Statutory Revenue Allocation, N250.35 million from Excess Crude, N56.77 million from Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) and N25.54 million being refund by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

The FCT Area Councils JAAC, according to the minister, transferred N905.89 million to the FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) for the payment of primary school teachers’ salaries in the six area councils.

The Auditor-General for FCT Area Councils, Fred Omaka, told the members of the Committee that biometric audit of all the workers in the area councils would take off on July 29, 2013.

Imo government completes 60 MDG projects

The administration of Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State says over 60 projects under the state government and MDG partnerships have been completed.

The projects would be ready for commissioning by the end of the month.

The Governor, who announced this said the projects were under the 60/40 programme of the government aimed at improving health care services in the rural areas.

Okorocha spoke as part of resolution at the end of a meeting with the Millennium Development Goal Project, MDGS, coordinator in Imo State, Nma Nzeribe.

He disclosed that the project under the MDGs include primary health centres, emergency flood shelter buildings and community health centres, adding that they would be equipped in line with global standard.

Okorocha urged contractors handling some of these projects to expedite action to ensure completion of the project within the stipulated time.

He maintained that the present administration was determined to pursue all projects designed to improve the lives of the people, especially at the grassroots, and advised benefiting communities to guard the projects in their domain with care, in their overall interest, and report to government any deviation.

PFAs to invest N3.4tn in infrastructure

Pension Fund Administrators will invest part of the growing pension funds in infrastructure after the Pension Reform Act 2004 must have been replaced with a new act.

This was contained in a memorandum submitted by the National Pension Commission to the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service and the House Committee on Pensions at the joint public hearing for the proposed enactment of the Pension Reform Act 2013.

Acting Director-General, PenCom, Chinelo Anohu-Amazu, said the commission proposed that the funds should be utilised for national development.

It added that provisions had been made in the bill for the expansion of permissible investment instruments to accommodate initiatives for national development, such as investment in the real sector.

Although the memo stressed the investment in infrastructure, PenCom insisted on the safety of pension fund assets.

Osun lawmaker empowers 700 farmers

No fewer than 700 farmers benefitted from agricultural inputs donated by the lawmaker Adeyinka Ajayi representing Ifelodun/Odo-Otin Federal Constituency of Osun State.

The farm implements which include fertilisers, insecticides, cutlasses, axes, improved seedlings, valued at several million of naira was to boost food production this planting season in the area.

While performing the distribution of the farm inputs at three locations, Ekonde for Ifelodun Local Governmnent Council, Inisa for Odo-Otin Local Government and Iragbiji for Boripe Local Government, Adeyinka Ajayi said that the gesture was to compliment the efforts the state government headed by Governor Rauf Aregbesola is making to boost food production in the state.

Ajayi admitted the fact that the only way to assist the state government is to contribute his quota by assisting the farmers in boosting food production.

He declared that the people of the state had witnessed a complete transformation in all the sectors in the last two and half years adding that more dividends of democracy would be brought to the door steps of the people especially those at the grassroots level.

Shareholders get N230m from Trustfund

Board of Trustfund Pensions Plc in Nigeria has announced a dividend pay-out of N230 million for the year 2012 with shareholders receiving 23 kobo per N1 share compared to 15 kobo in 2011.

Nigeria Labour Congres, NLC; Trade Union Congress, TUC; and Nigeria Employers Consultative Association, NECA, who are major shareholders of Trustfund Pensions expressed delight at the news of the boost in dividend.

The board also announced the confirmation of the appointment of the Acting Managing Director, Helen Da-Souza as substantive chief executive.

She is the first woman to head Trustfund Pensions Plc.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of Trustfund Pensions Plc, Ngozi Olejeme, made the announcement of the dividend boost for shareholders, weekend, at the annual general meeting in Abuja.

Notwithstanding the successes recorded by Trustfund Pension Plc, Olejeme said the growth rate in the pensions industry “remains slow mainly due to the lack of compliance by employers and the slow pace of implementation of the contributory scheme by state governments.”

NLC President, Abdulwaheed Omar, said of the progress recorded by the Fund, “we are progressing and I hope that this trend will continue.
