Why PDP Senators staged a walkout on Amaechi's confirmation– Akpabio

Senators elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP on Thursday justified their decision to stage a walkout during the confirmation of ministerial nominees earlier screened.

According to the Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, says they had staged a walkout to avoid being part of what he called “illegality” as the Senate was set to confirm a former governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi.

Akpabio, while describing the confirmation of Amaechi as a “charade” regrets that the APC senators did not give them opportunity to express their position.

Rivers Integrity group had submitted a petition against the former Rivers Governor, alleging corruption while he was in office.

However, the report of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges that looked into the matter was rejected just as the APC senators went ahead to confirm Amaechi and 17 others as ministers.

Ohi of Adavi, Ibrahim Asuku is dead

A highly respected traditional ruler of kogi Central Zone of Kogi state also the Ohi of Adavi, HRH Ohi Ibrahim Asuku is dead. 

Ohi Ibrahim Asuku who died at the age of 71 on this morning will be remembered for enthroning peace in the area throughout his reign and will be missed for his role in developing Adaviland.

Born in 1944 and hailed from Adavi-Eba (Upopo-Uvete) in Apasi group of clans in Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi state, HRH Dr. Bello Asuku Ibrahim attended the then I.N.A Central School Okene between 1955 and 1960 and  was later trained as a Grade Two Teacher at Okene Teachers’ College (OTC) from 1962 to 1966.

In 1967, he enrolled at the Advanced Teachers’ College, Kano where he obtained an NCE preparatory for entry into the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) for the B.Sc. (Hons) between 1974 and 1977, with speciality in Health and Physical Education.

Bayelsa declares seven-day mourning for Alamieyeseigha

The Bayelsa State Government has declared a seven- day mourning in honour of a former Governor of the state, Chief Diepreye  Alamieyeseigha, who died last Saturday at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH).

A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the state Governor, Daniel Iworiso-Markson directed that all flags in all public buildings and premises across the state be flown at half mast for the period.

According to the statement, the mourning period started on Monday.

It added that condolence registers had been opened in Government House and the state Secretariat.

EFCC quizzes former Benue governor, Suswam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has commenced interrogations of former Governor of Benue state, Gabriel Suswam over alleged massive corruption in the state during his tenure as Governor. Suswan was arrested Monday and is being questioned by EFCC.

Suswam, who left office on May 29, is alleged to have made away with state funds running into billions of Naira and is to defend himself against the charges.

Speaking with newsmen a short while ago, the EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwajuren confirmed that Suswan was arrested Today, Monday and is being quizzed by the anti-graft agency.

Recall that the commission on Friday grilled his former finance commissioner, Mr. Omadachi Oklobia for hours in Abuja with a view to eliciting vital information that may help them in confronting Suswam.

Recall also that the incumbent Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has already raised a Judicial Commission of Enquiry to probe ex-governor Suswam for alleged looting of funds running into hundreds of millions of money.

Tribunal upholds Dino Melaye’s election

The National Assembly and Legislative Houses Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Lokoja, Kogi State has upheld the election of Senator Dino Melaye as the winner of the 2015 Kogi West Senatorial Election against the petition by his rival, Senator Smart Adeyemi.

Melaye had been declared winner of the election conducted March 28 pulling an upset that shocked many who had come to know Senator Adeyemi for his populist views in the Senate and even his populist exposure at home.

The legal exchange between the two contending parties reached a dramatic point last Tuesday after the lawyers of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC were compelled to tender a certified true copy of the APC report on the Kogi West Senatorial primaries in which it was adduced that Melaye did not partake in that primary.

Sylva's reply to oshomole

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has described the reported emergence of former Governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, as the All Progressive Congress gubernatorial candidate in the state as a “huge joke.”

Oshiomhole who is the Chairman of an electoral committee set up by the national leadership of APC to conduct the governorship primaries in Bayelsa State says Sylva is not declared winner of the primaries, hence no Certificate of Return is issued to him.

Speaking to reporters in Benin City, Oshiomhole notes that the purported emergence of Sylva would not alter the rules of the party adding that other aspirants agreed to follow the guidelines released by the national leadership of the party, but Sylva insisted that the primaries should be conducted without accreditation.

The Edo State number one man Stress that Sylva insisted that it was wrong for the national Secretariat to conduct the primaries and that it was the function of the party leadership in the state.

Meanwhile the winner of the All Progressives Congress governorship primaries held on Tuesday in Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva, has dismissed claims by Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, who headed the Electoral Committee, that he (Sylva) disrupted the electoral process and in fact aborted it.

Sylva in a statement says Oshiomhole was evidently biased in favour of one of the aspirants.

He alleged that it was one of the friends of the favoured aspirants that provided the helicopter that brought Oshiomhole to the venue of the primaries.

Sylva says it is unfortunate that people like Adams Oshiomhole, the governor of Edo State and former president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, who pretend to be incorruptible, would conduct himself in the manner in which he did in relation to the Bayelsa State governorship primary. 

It was clear that Oshiomhole never wanted to conduct the primary as earliar scheduled.

Bayelsa APC primaries: Oshiomhole meets guber aspirants

Ahead today’s All Progressives Congress, APC, primaries in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Edo State governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole yesterday met with the 19 gubernatorial aspirants of the party over the guidelines to be used for the conduct of the governorship primaries in the state.

Governor Oshiomhole, who led a 7-man Electoral Committee to Yenagoa into the meeting with the aspirants and other stakeholders of the APC, said the governorship primaries should be considered as a family affair, adding that the rules on the conduct of the party primaries was not different from those used in Kogi and the national primaries of the party.

According to Oshiomhole, a total of 1,508 delegates are expected to vote during the primaries, with two Board of Trustees, BoT, members, former governor, Chief Timipre Sylva and the National Deputy Publicity Secretary of the party, Timi Frank as eligible voters.

Oshiohmole also announced Samson Siasia stadium as venue for the primaries, just as he confirmed that voting will be by open ballot system with use of national identification card and voters’ card as means of identification for delegates.

The Edo State governor however, warned aspirants against involvement in issue of cloning of voters’ cards and presentation of new national identification cards as means of identification.
