Nigeria’s indigenous telecoms service provider,
Globacom, has signed a new $500 million contract with ZTE, a global Information
and Communication Technology solutions provider, for network upgrade, bringing
the former’s network investment for 2013 to a whopping $1.250 billion.
It will be recalled that the telecoms operator, last
week, Globacom had signed a $750 million pact with Huawei, a global
telecommunication infrastructures provider for the same purpose.
The latest contract, which is for a four-month
period is to enable Globacom to “massively expand its current huge capacity.”
Globacom’s Group Chief Operating Officer, Mohamed Jameel, who spoke at the
contractsigning ceremony held at the company’s head office in Lagos, explained
that the network enhancement project was part of the plan to enhance the
experience of millions of subscribers on the Globacom network.
He said the contract with ZTE was to enable the
network operator upgrade its facilities to the very latest technology in global
telecommunications.
The massive expansion project will involve network
upgrade and overhaul of infrastructure across the country as well as expansion
and densification projects that will on completion in four months enable the
network to cater more for its existing and potential subscribers.
