Federal Government has concluded plans to stop the importation of wheat into the country to create markets for farmers involved in the production of the grain.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Akinwumi Adesina who made this known during the inaugural meeting of the Nigeria Agribusiness Group, NAG, in Abuja said Nigeria would meet 68% wheat needs by 2015.
Adesina said the
government is looking into the local production of wheat in the Northern part
of Nigeria as he informed members of the group that the Lake Chad Research
Institute of Nigeria has released new high yielding tropical and heat tolerant
wheat varieties that can yield up to 6 tons per hectare.
He thereafter
encouraged members to seriously consider investing in commercial wheat
production to take advantage of the new opportunities.
