FG Releases 2016/2017 Admission List into Unity Schools

The federal government on Tuesday in Abuja released the admission list for the 2016 and 2017 academic session into Unity Schools. 

The release came amid denials by the federal government of increment in the school fees.

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, approved the release of the admission list of successful candidates into the Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs) for the 2016/2017 academic year.

Announcing a statement yesterday,  Adamu said the list which is available in all the colleges, has also been posted online via www.fmeinterviewtest.com and that candidates who took part in the National Common Entrance Examination should check their names on that site, using their registration numbers.

An analysis of the results indicate that a total of 89,231 candidates took part in the examination, out of which 46,869 met the cut off mark.

Based on the carrying capacity of each college and approved  cut off mark, 24,422 candidates have been admitted, with Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC) Bwari, Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC) Owerri and Federal Government College (FGC) Enugu topping the list with a total of 400 students each, while Federal Science and Technical College (FSTC) Otukpo and Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC) Tambuwal  had the least number of 120 candidates each.

The resumption date for all Unity Schools is slated for  September 19, 2016.

IPCC investigate Two police officers over the Taser death of former Premier League footballer Dalian Atkinson

Two police officers are under criminal investigation over the Taser death of former Premier League footballer Dalian Atkinson.

The 48-year-old ex-Aston Villa and Ipswich Town player was shot with a stun gun in the street after allegedly attempting to kill his 85-year-old father in his home.

Atkinson died 90 minutes after he was Tasered outside the house where he grew up in Telford, Shropshire, in the early hours of Monday.

The retired striker's death is being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), which said it would carry out 'a full and thorough' inquiry into the actions of West Mercia Police.

World's longest aircraft takes off to the sky

The world's longest aircraft completed its maiden flight on Wednesday as it took off from Bedford, 96 kilometers north of London.

The Airlander 10, part plane and part airship, took off at 7:40 p.m. local time from the Cardington Airfield, spending nearly two hours in the sky.

The 25 million pounds (32 million US dollars) aircraft, nicknamed “the flying bum” because of the unusual shape of its rear end, measures 92 meters long, which is around 15 meters longer than the biggest passenger jets.

The aircraft’s first flight was initially scheduled for Sunday but was postponed due to a technical problem.

Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV), the British company that funded the aircraft, said the technology combines the best characteristics of fixed wing aircraft and helicopters to create a new breed of hyper-efficient aircraft.

The Airlander 10 can be used for various functions, including carrying cargo, military and commercial surveillance, and has a significantly lower carbon footprint than other forms of air transport.

Robbers attack CBN bullion vans, kill two policemen

Two mobile policemen were killed in the early hours of Tuesday at Hawan Kibo along Jos – Abuja road as armed robbers attacked a convoy of bullion vans belonging to the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Our correspondent gathered that the bullion vans and their retinue of armed mobile policemen escorts had left Jos in the early hours of Tuesday enroute Abuja.

But somewhere along Hawan Kibo, immediately after a military check point, the armed robbers, wearing military uniforms, emerged from a bush and attacked a patrol team belonging the Plateau State security outfit, “Operation Rainbow”, attached to Riyom local government, killing a mobile policeman on the spot.

PDP screens 57 aspirants, insists on going ahead

Former Governor of Benue State and the Chairman of Peoples Democratic party National Convention Screening Committee, Gabriel Suswam, has said the committee will screen 57 aspirants who bought forms to contest for positions in the party.

Suswam made the information known in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Monday at the commencement of the screening preparatory for the party’s National Convention holding on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the News Agency of Nigeria learnt that the committee has screened aspirants for the post of national chairman, including a former Deputy National Chairman of PDP, Chief Bode George.

Governor, Nyesom Wike's visit to the family of Late Godspower Ake

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has described the Late Former Rivers State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Godspower Ake as a developmental politician who offered fatherly advice to all, irrespective of political leaning.

Speaking during a condolence visit to the family of Late Chief Godspower Ake in Port Harcourt on Monday, Governor Wike declared that the Rivers State Government will participate in the burial of the late politician because he has served the state.

He said death is a necessary end that will be the portion of every human being at the appointee time .

Responding, the widow of the late PDP State Chairman, Mrs Christina Ake said that Chief G. U. Ake has gone to meet with the Lord.

She said the Late Political Leader was a gift to the state, pointing out that he used his talents judiciously to serve the people.

A brother of the Late Politician, Senator Winston Ake was amongst the family members who received Governor Wike.

Governor Wike was accompanied on the condolence visit by Former Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, Senator Lee Maeba, Chief Sergeant Awuse , Senator George Sekibo, Prince Shedrach Akalokwu and Prince Emma Anyanwu.

Omeruo Joins Besiktas On Loan From Chelsea

Nigeria defender Kenneth Omeruo has joined Turkish champions Besiktas on a season-long loan deal from Chelsea, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

A source close to the club hinted that Besiktas will pay the Blues a €700,000 loan fee and have a €3 million release clause option, which will remain active until the end of the season.

There will now be a total of 22 Nigerian players plying their trade in Turkey – all leagues.

Omeruo was also one of the 35 players the Blues loaned out last season, playing for Super Lig minnows Kasimpasa.

The 22-year-old was, however, one of the stands out young defenders in the league, making 25 Super Lig appearances.

Omeruo earned himself an upgrade across Istanbul to league giants, Besiktas, where he will gain Champions League football experience for the first time in his career.

Ambode approves law prohibiting land grabbing in Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has fulfilled his pledge of making the menace of land grabbing in Lagos a thing of the past with the signing of the Lagos State Properties Protection Law.

Governor Ambode also signed the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps Law, a move which is majorly aimed at boosting security of lives and property in all the Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas of the State.

Speaking at the signing ceremony which was attended by the Lagos State Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa; the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Olufunmilayo Atilade and other top government functionaries, Governor Ambode says the laws is central to his administration’s focus of safeguarding the lives of all residents, as well as attracting, growing investments and improving the ease of doing business in the State.

Nigeria will become better - Kumuyi

The General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi has urged Nigerians to keep hope alive in God because Nigeria will become better.


Kumuyi made this known at a Special Sunday service organised by the church yesterday at the International Bible Training Centre, Ayobo, Lagos.

The programme had thousands of Christians from across the state, with the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Emmanuel Udom; and Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Justice Uwemedimo Nwoko present.

According to him, no matter the challenges, we need hope, and with hope, every thing will fall into place and Nigeria will become better.

He noted that the fight against corruption and other social upheavals begin with everyone and in our homes where righteousness, probity and godliness are given its pride of place.

Earlier, governor of Akwa Ibom state Udom Emmanuel called on governments to rethink and provide strategies on diversification of the economy noting that there is no developed nation that cannot feed its people. One step in development is the ability of the government to feed its people.

The cleric recalled that God did not create man until he created what he would eat, that there is so much we can get from the land.

He said we have viable lands and better climate conditions, thus a better and pragmatic framework on agriculture will help us revive our economy also pointing that agriculture was one of his five-point agenda, and it’s because of the need to look beyond oil.

While applauding Kumuyi in the promotion of peace and spiritual rejuvenation, he said “if we are praying this much and men of God sacrifice themselves for this country; I am sure, we will reach our promise land”.

He urged Nigerians to continue to pray for Nigeria because soon if we do not relent in our prayers we will sing a new song.

Parishioners at Queen of Apostles Catholic Church, Kakuri parish, Kaduna State, are still in shock following revelation that the parish priest, Very Reverend Father Peter Zuni, 54, was engaged in a secret marriage to two women, an act that led to his being disrobed and sacked from the priesthood.

Enewz gathered that one of the wives is already late, while the surviving one who blew the whistle about three weeks ago over the secret marriage is said to be nursing a child for the embattled priest.

According to the doctrine of the Catholic Church, only unmarried men are ordained into the priesthood as they are obligated to swear to an oath of celibacy and observe perfect and perpetual service for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. This, it is believed, would enable the priests to easily remain close to Christ with an undivided heart, and dedicate themselves more freely to the service of God and the congregation.

Blessing Okagbare's medal hopes in Rio Olympics Dashed

 

The first medal hope for Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare is off her sleeves following the conclusion of the women’s 100m final at the ongoing Rio Olympic Games.

Okagbare, who made the finals of this same event at the London Olympics four years ago but finished last, could not match her performance as she could not make it beyond the semi finals in Rio.

The reigning commonwealth champion finished 3rd in her semi final race with a time of 11.09 but the intensity of the races ensured that only athletes that ran under 11seconds made it to the final.

In the final race proper, Elaine Thompson ended the eight-year Olympic reign of her training partner and compatriot, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, in a thrilling final as the Jamaican secured gold in a stunning 10.71, the second-fastest winning time in the history of the women’s Olympic 100m final.

One other outcome of our democratic experience since 1999 is how demanding and insatiable the Nigerian voter has become, and because political office holders and the professional political class are yet to fully decipher and understand the implications of this, they continue to make similar mistakes and draw the same responses from the same public that voted them into power.

I have no better illustration of this than the manner in which the critics of the incumbent administration at the centre are beginning to sound exactly the same way they sounded about two years ago under the Jonathan administration. Check the social media, some newspapers, and listen to the conversation on the streets. The personnel in power have changed, there is a new party in charge at the top, but public conversation has gone back to its old ways. Questions are being asked about the meaning of change and the dividends it has brought to the people.
   
Some commentators are openly apologizing for voting President Goodluck Jonathan and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) out of power.  Some fierce supporters of change and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are openly voicing their regrets. And as was the case under President Jonathan, there are hilarious skits online, mixing song, drama and dance, making fun of the new dispensation and its architects. More than one pro-change and anti-PDP newspapers have had cause to do scathing editorials, including the very newspaper that was the anchor-point for change in 2015.

Lagos reinforces security in ikorodu: seals off western lodge hotel.

 

The Lagos State government has reassured the general public that securing the lives and property of well-meaning and peace-loving residents in the state remain its priority.

In a statement released on Sunday by the State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, the government advised that the general public should be extra vigilant and report any suspicious activity in their immediate environment to the Police or any of the security services within the state.

The statement urges members of the public not to allow any building to be used to harbor criminals or serve as a base for criminal activities.

According to the statement, recent security investigations in the Ikorodu area of the state have revealed that the Western Lodge Hotel, located at 123, Isawo Road, Agric area of Ikorodu has been associated with illegal and criminal activities and the Lagos State government has accordingly decided to seal up the hotel until further notice.

The statement added that “government will immediately reinforce the presence of security agents in and around Ikorodu axis” in order to further reassure residents of the determination of the government to safeguard lives and property in the area.

The press release added that the Lagos State government warns that it will not hesitate to prosecute and confiscate any building found to have been used or is being used to aid criminal activities.
