While
Facebook has had chat applications for some time, they've largely
flattered to deceive. Their tie up with Skype has made things better,
but the assault by Facebook on the mobile market has taken a new step this week. They announced that they are adding a new feature to their mobile app that will allow users to make free calls, providing that is they're both American and using an iPhone.
The app will allow users to call one another via the Facebook Messenger app from anywhere with a wi-fi or data connection.
It's a great feature for anyone that makes a large volume of voice calls, as it obviously allows them to bypass traditional call charges.
Facebook have said that they are working on similar services for BlackBerry and Android users so that they can enjoy it in the same way as their Apple brethren.
Users can tell when the service is available as an 'i' icon will appear in the top right hand corner of the chat window. Tapping it will provide them with the option of making a free call.
It will, however, require both callers to have the Messenger feature installed on their iPhone.
The latest mobile-to-mobile development was independent of the free video-calling software Skype, which was already integrated into Facebook's website, a spokesman said. The Messenger app is limited to voice calling.
